We have just received another order in the store. The response has been fantastic. They are so beautiful...each set is one of a kind.
The unique patterns and colours in the rock are indications of the mineral diversity of the Madoc area, in Eastern Ontario, which is at the edge of the Canadian Shield. The marble is collected and trimmed to make the coasters unique art pieces. We sell them for $34.95 for a set of four.

The 7th Annual Artwalk in Yonge Lawrence Village is in it's last week. The judges have made their rounds and ardith one got 2nd place. Our artist, Debora Gordon, provided us with some absolutely stunning paintings (as you can see below). The combination of her work and our pottery was a success. I always enjoy this event. It's so much fun putting a window together.
If you're interested in purchasing any of her pieces there is the North Toronto Group of Artist Show and Sale on Saturday, November 5th at Blessed Sacrement Church.

Our Annual Pottery Sale was a great success. Even though we did not officially open till 8:30 am, customers showed up at 7:30...with coffee, of course. Great deals, great party on the street with Village Day and the rain held off till 1pm and only sprinkled for 1/2 an hour. Bill and I just got back from Montreal. We picked up pottery from Eric Ciup, Helga Mader and Ursula Sommerer. The newest glaze by Eric is called oatmeal and it is combined with a lovely ash green glaze. Eric has promised to send some pictures asap. Ursula's new items include thrown tumblers and mugs (check out those gorgeous handles) plus serving bowls done in the lime and turquoise glazes.

She has been working really hard on this and, as you can see by the pictures below, the red came out beautifully. Bill has decided to make Inukshuks. He was inspired by them at the Winter Olympics and what they stand for...friendship and mutual dependence. The traditional meaning of "you are on the right path" is very important to him and he hopes these are given in that spirit. The stones for his Inukshuks were gathered on the shores of Lake Huron, Ontario.

Robert Tetu and Gary Brierley are two potters we carried many years ago. They have both decided to show their work at ardith one again and we couldn't be happier. We have a good selection of Gary's work and a sample of Robert's in the store right now.

We know that Gary's work will sell because of his traditional glazes plus his pricing is extremely reasonable. Robert is a well known potter and his glazes (the persimmon shown above and a shino) are classic and very popular with our customers. We are looking forward to working with both these potters for many years to come.

Despite the rain and threat of rain, our sale was successful. The street festival went on as planned by the Yonge Lawrence Village BIA Co-ordinator, Rick O'Connor. Thanks to all those hardy Torontonians who came out and enjoyed the fabulous bands, good food and great sales.

Let me introduce you to our newest potter, Ursula Sommerer, from Montreal. She is a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton, New Brunswick and of McGill University in Montréal and has won many awards in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for excellence in design and innovative products.

We just picked up a selection of her porcelain pieces and will be carrying three of her glazes... a blue/lime green combo, a lime green on white and a dark blue. All the pottery has a fish motive which suits the elongated shapes of most of her pieces. They can range from 6" up to 27" wide. I feel confident her work will do really well in the store. We sold a few pieces minutes after I put her work in the window on Saturday.

As some of you might know, our front window was broken on Feb. 14th. We would like to thank all those who took the time to phone the police, email or phone us. We would especially like to say a huge "Thank-you" to our neighbours upstairs who boarded up the window and the two young ladies who guarded the contents so no one could help himself. We don't know who you are but a big hug goes out to you.
Both Bill and I were at the Olympics in Vancouver so Georgina, on her first full day of work, had to deal with the mess. Fortunately, my sister was available to assist her and calm her nerves.Thanks again to all involved including our insurance and glass replacement company who got the new sheet of glass up within 24 hours.

With only two weeks to go, the excitement is building. We couldn't be more proud that Canada is hosting the Olympics in Vancouver and wish our atheletes the best to "own the podium". We have just received a great selection of Inukshuks by Alain Bouchard starting at $16.95. They are the perfect gift to take to Vancouver, a party to watch and celebrate the games or as a special overseas souvenir of Canada.

As the logo of the 2010 Olympics, they have been a Canadian icon for many years. The Inukshuk is a traditional stone sculpture used by Canada's Inuit people.They are suppose to give directions to travelers by acting as a compass or guide, to warn of impending danger, to mark a place of respect, or to act as helpers in the hunting of caribou.

Again, our Village Day Sale was a success. We were busy from 8:30 am till closing at 5:30 pm. As usual, a few dedicated customers came early (7:30 am) to select items as Bill and I were setting up. We have been doing this for over 30 years now and I feel our customers really appreciate the bargains we offer just once a year. The weather, although cool in the morning, warmed up and got quite hot by the end of the day. We are always keeping our fingers crossed on this, since it's totally out of our control.

We went to Montreal this weekend to pick up two orders. Both Eric Ciup and Helga Mader have been doing pottery for us for many years...close to twenty for Eric. The new persimmon glaze (one of 4 done by Eric) always sells out quickly. Helga does two glazes for us and the bowl below is an example of her "Oka". The orders are unpacked and on display now, ready for you to see and enjoy.
Last week we received an order from Barbara Howe and there was an excellant selection of her "copper red" glaze. For anyone keeping track of this glaze, it has proved to be very hard for Barbara to get consistantly. Although we are very pleased to have it in the store right now there are no guarantees that we will get more in the future. So, if this is one of your favourites, don't hesitate. Come on in and have a look!

Last Cottage Life Show

Bill and I have decided to give up the Cottage Life Shows. We have been doing them for eight years now. The setting up and working of the shows has just become too physically demanding.

It's time for us to say good-bye to the wonderful group of people who manage both shows so well. We could not have asked for a better relationship. They not only saw to any problems immediately but were able to bring in both a great and knowledgable crowd. We will miss the staff, wish them well and hope that all the customers we met through the shows will come to the shop when they are in town.

It's that time of year again. Please note that the Trading Post has moved to Building 3A. We are booth # 15. This will be our last Cottage Life Show. Bill and I are just getting a little too long in the tooth for the hours of set-up and up to the 10 hour days. We've had a good run and met many new customers. Hopefully, with the internet, they will be able to continue to do business with us even though they are many miles away from Toronto.

All Fired Up has redesigned two of our favorite clocks and light switches. The Tall Moose Standing is now The Bull Moose and Herbs is now Garden Herbs. It's always good to change things up every now and then and we think both these will do very well in the store.

It's that time of year again. Next Friday, Nov. 7th is the start of the Fall Cottage Life Show at the International Centre on Airport Road. As always, we are looking forward to seeing both our regular customers and meeting new ones. Both Bill and I will be in the booth all three days. We will be introducing the stunning wall plaques by Dawn Detarando and Brian McArthur to the Cottage Life crowd. (You can go to July 28/08 to check out a couple of tiles). We are bringing the work of Barb Howe, Wayne Cardinalli, Lou Hanson, Dotti Potts, Eric Ciup, canoes by Daniel Maxwell (our top seller at the last two shows) plus a selection of milk bag pitchers and berry bowls. We will also have pottery and wooden marquetry Christmas decorations and, as always, the beautiful photographic cards by Geof Burbidge that represent cottage country so well.

We've just received an order in by Melanie. We have lots of oval slab plates in three sizes with her northern landscapes plus a selection with her inukshuk motif. Her small dishes can be used for olive oil/balsamic vinegar dipping sauce or for soap. We will be showing her work at the Cottage Life Show in November.

We just come back from Montreal and brought our fall and Christmas order from Eric Ciup. We are concentrating on his persimmon and ash glaze and his shino glaze. As the week passed we also received orders from Maggie Murdock, Barb Howe, Amaranth Stoneware and our newest addition to our store, jeweller, Anne-Marie Chagnon from Montreal.
